The artwork portrays Helena Gualinga, an Indigenous Kichwa activist from the Ecuadorian Amazon and a leading global voice for environmental justice, Indigenous rights, and climate action.

 

Through expressive colour and a strong visual presence, the painting honours Gualinga’s courageous advocacy for the protection of ancestral lands, biodiversity, and the rights of future generations. The work reflects the I Was Born a Girl mission to elevate women who defend life, dignity, and justice — and to recognise environmental protection as an essential and inseparable human right.
